Whether walking a pilgrimage is on your list of things to do because of your religious, spiritual beliefs or that you want to feel like you are experiencing walking in history. Walking with Shepherds Walks Holidays along St Cuthbert’s Way will satisfy all of those needs as well as having stunning scenery along the way while you have time for contemplation and letting you forget your everyday worries.
This pilgrimage follows the route of St Cuthbert from Melrose in the Scottish Borders where he started his ministry in 650 AD to his eventual resting place on Lindisfarne (Holy Island). Crossing the Scottish Borders to England you will pass through historic villages and towns, following the path along streams, open spaces, woodland paths and hills such as Wideopen Hill in the Cheviots where you will experience breathtaking views.
St Cuthbert was made the Prior of the Abbey on Lindisfarne but he would often retire to the Inner Farne Island to live the life of a hermit. This is where he was at his happiest and it was to be the place he returned to for his final days. When he died the monks brought his body back to Lindisfarne where he was buried. In 875 AD the monks fled the island with his remains to escape the Vikings invading the Island. Heading for Durham the monks rested at a cave, now known as St Cuthbert’s Cave which can be seen walking along St Cuthbert’s Way.
If you would like to share the experience of walking this Iconic pilgrimage as a group let us use our expertise and arrange this for you. We are based in rural Northumberland, so we have local knowledge having personally walked the route. We often know the accommodation proprietors personally and liaise with them regularly, so they will go that extra mile to help us to help you whilst out on your route.
Our skills have helped arrange many holidays for groups from North America, Europe and of course the UK. Offering you complete flexibility makes us unique and means we can make your trip bespoke to your needs.
Previously we have arranged to meet up with a group every morning to run through the days walk ahead and then move the bags onto the next accommodation. We can arrange transportation throughout the trip, including station and airport pickups, packed lunches and the use of a guide to maybe walk with you along the Pilgrim’s Way crossing the sands barefoot to Holy Island or even for the full trip.
Whatever your needs be it as a group or a solo walker we at Shepherds Walks Holidays are here to help every step of the way.
