Day : 1 - Arrive Newcastle
Newcastle is our chosen rendezvous point for our Hadrian's Wall Highlights walk. With its excellent road, rail and air connections, getting to and from Newcastle is easy. For those arriving by car, you will be able to leave your vehicle at your first night's accommodation in Newcastle. The hotel in Newcastle is a short taxi ride from central station. You will be based in Newcastle for the first night. At a suitable point a general overview of the next few days of walking will be given.
Day : 2 - Carlisle to Lanercost
14 miles (23 kilometres)
From Newcastle upon Tyne we will transfer you to Carlisle, the start of your journey along Hadrian’s Wall National Trail.
You will initially walk through the lovely parkland of Carlisle before striding out into the open countryside.
Your accommodation this night will be in the Walton area.
Day : 3 - Lanercost to Gilsland
5 miles (8 kilometres)
After a hearty breakfast you have you have a gentle day's walk through some wonderful countryside.
Today you actually walk along long sections of true ‘wall’ and if time allows, Birdoswalds Fort is certainly worth a visit.
Birdoswald Fort stands high above a bend in the River Irthing, in one of the most picturesque settings on Hadrian's Wall. A Roman fort, turret and milecastle can all be seen on this excellent stretch of the Wall. With probably the best preserved defences of any Wall fort, this was an important base for some 1,000 Roman soldiers, succeeding an earlier fort of turf and timber.
Your finish point for today is the small village of Gilsland, which is the area where your third night's accommodation will be.
Day : 4 - Gilsland to Steel Rigg
9 miles (14 kilometres)
After a hearty breakfast you have what is your hardest day's walking of the trip, but what wonderful countryside!
As the ground starts to rise, the impressive nature of the wall starts to grow and you pass mile castle after mile castle as you experience true Hadrian Wall Country.
Upon reaching Steel Rigg it’s just a short walk to your accommodation.
Day : 5 - Steel Rigg to Chollerford
12 miles (19 kilometres)
Today you will cover what is probably one of the most famous and dramatic sections of the wall, past Sycamore Gap and Crag Lough. This section of the wall has been used a number of times in films, so memories will jump out at you all day.
On this day you will pass Houseteads which is the most complete example of a Roman fort in Britain, and now the most popular site on the Wall. It stands high on the exposed Whin Sill escarpment, commanding breathtaking views. It was one of 12 permanent forts added to the new frontier by Hadrian in about 124 AD. Known as 'Vercovicium' ('the place of effective fighters'), it was garrisoned by a cohort of around 800 infantry (for most of its history Tungrians from Belgium), later reinforced by Germanic cavalry.
Your route takes you to Chollerford, where you will be staying for the night.
Day : 6 - Chollerford to Heddon on the Wall
15 miles (24 kilometres)
At the start of this day you rise up out of Wall and there are some lovely views North to the Cheviot Hills. Today’s an easier day's walking than the previous two, and there are a number of places to stop off en route for light refreshments.
The route takes you straight into Heddon on the Wall where you can enjoy a much deserved drink.
You will then be transferred to your car in Newcastle, Newcastle railway station or airport. Alternatively we can add an extra night's stay for you in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Hadrian&039;s Wall Highlights - Self Guided

Just returned from a brilliant holiday. Organisation was first class. Briefings, pickups, bag transfer went like a dream. Accommodation and food excellent with hosts going that extra mile by giving us lifts to pubs and start points. Use of a gps was an added bonus too. Scenery was stunning and information and visitor centres en route added to the experience. Can totally recommend this holiday but be prepared for those hills (however the views are worth all the effort). Thank you Shepherds Walks.

Can I add an rest day into my walking holiday?
Yes you can at any point, just get in touch and we can discuss the best options for this trip.
Do you move our bags for us on our walking holiday?
Yes, we move your bags for you everyday. You just leave your main bag at your accommodation and we will move it for you, so it will be at your next nights accommodation waiting for you.
You just carry your day pack.
Your baggage allowance for the trip is one main piece of luggage which should be preferably either a backpack/rucksack or sports bag, and one small daypack. Try to travel as light as possible. It is best to avoid large solid hardtop suitcases as these cause difficulties on transfer vehicles etc.
The larger piece of luggage will travel on the vehicle between accommodations and the daypack should be suitable for carrying any additional outer-layer clothing and items you will need on your walk during the day. As a general rule, we would recommend that your main piece of luggage shouldn't weigh more than 15 - 20 kilos.
What walking equipment will I need for this trip?
Good quality walking boots/shoes will be needed for the trip and given the normal weather conditions, appropriate outdoor clothing including waterproofs are recommended. More details will be provided in your pre-departure dossier.
What type of accommodation will we be staying in - self guided trip
The accommodation on the tours are in Inns, family-run hotels, and Bed and Breakfasts. We endeavour to provide en-suite accommodation.
Why are your holiday's West to East along Hadrian's Wall?
This is so you have the prevailing wind behind you.
We have walked the Hadrian's Wall Trail many times and seen people battle against the wind and we ask the question why don't you let the elements help you out.
Also what better place to finish your walk than Wallsend, the clue is in the name.
What is a Double, Twin and Single room?
Double – One double bed for two people.
Twin – Two single beds each for one person.
Single – A room with a single bed in.
