Northumberland Coast Path - Self Guided

The Northumberland coast is best known for its sweeping sandy beaches, rolling dunes, high rocky cliffs and isolated islands. The special qualities of this coastal landscape led it to being designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1958 recognising that the Northumberland coast is one of the finest landscapes in the country.

This 64 miles walk takes in probably one of the finest sections of coastline in England. Part of the 'North Sea Trail' you will follow the Northumberland Coast Path from Cresswell in the South to Berwick upon Tweed in the North.

The route follows the coast in most places with an inland detour between Belford and Holy Island. Most of the route is on footpaths and bridleways but in some places beaches, minor roads and permissive paths are used.

The route is generally level with very few steep climbs and makes for a superb walking holiday in Northumberland.

Self-guided Walking Holiday along the Northumberland Coast Path From Cresswell to Berwick-upon-Tweed over 7 days giving you plenty of time to explore some of the sights on route.

Day 1 - Arrive Warkworth
Day 2 - Cresswell to Warkworth - 10.5m (17km)
Day 3 - Warkworth to Craster - 13m (21km)
Day 4 - Craster to Seahouses - 10m (16km)
Day 5 - Seahouses to Belford - 10.5m (17km)
Day 6 - Belford to Fenwick - 6.5m (11km)
Day 7 - Fenwick to Berwick-upon-Tweed - 12m (19km)

    Day : 1 - Arrive into Warkworth

    Overnight stay

You will arrive either via train into Alnmouth or by car into Warkworth and stay the first night in Warkworth.

    Day : 2 - Cresswell to Warkworth

    10 miles (17 kilometres)

You will be picked up from Warkworth and taken up to Cresswell to start your walking. This superb section follows the eight miles of sandy bay of Druridge Bay and its string of nature reserves.

Your walk will take you through the fishing port of Amble, Coquet Estuary and the historic village of Warkworth. There is a considerable amount of beach walking and the rest is on good paths.

You will be staying in the region of Warkworth for your second nights stay.

    Day : 3 - Warkworth to Craster

    13 miles (21 kilometres)

You will walk along this impressive section taking in Buston Links, the fishing villages of Alnmouth, Boulmer and Craster with bays of golden sand punctuated by rocky headlands along the way.

You will be staying in the region of Craster for your third night.

    Day : 4 - Craster to Seahouses

    10 miles (16 kilometres)

Today you will walk from Craster along to Seahouses passing the dramatic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, Low Newton by the sea and the wide sweeping bays of Embleton and Beadnell.

    Day : 5 - Seahouses to Belford

    10 miles (17 kilometres)

After a hearty breakfast you will be ready for another great section along the Northumberland coast. This time from Seahouses to Belford.

This section offers fantastic views of the Farne Islands, Bamburgh Casle and Budle Bay. You will pass a wide range of habitats along the way including farmland, whin grassland and woodland before reaching Belford, where you will spend the night.

    Day : 6 - Belford to Fenwick

    6 miles (11 kilometres)

Today is the shortest day's walking and is the inland section of the coast path, however it offers magnificent views of Holy Island, Bamburgh and the Farne Islands.

We will make a short detour to St Cuthbert's Cave and this section involves a couple of steady climbs on good paths. Upon reaching Fenwick you will have just a short walk to your accommodation.

Day : 7 - Fenwick to Berwick upon Tweed

    12 miles (19 kilometres)

For your final days walking you will follow the coastal path along the wide open flats of Fenham, Holy Island and the cast Goswick Sands. Then the scenery changes completely after Cocklawburn as you walk along the cliff top path before dropping into the historic town of Berwick upon Tweed.

At the end of the days walking it is just a short walk to Berwick upon Tweed railway station, or we can arrange an extra nights accommodation (not included in price) for you in Berwick upon Tweed. Alternatively if you have arrived by car we can run you back to Warkworth to pick your car up.

A stunning stretch of coastline and hada great few days away.

It is an area we had seen lots on the TV so raelly glad to see it for ourselves.

Beautiful countryside and stunning sea views

    16th Jul 2015John and Enid P

The Northumberland Coastal Path is a lovely and easy walk, with no great hills to climb, but with beautiful countryside and stunning sea views. The accommodation was very good with friendly hosts, and was mostly very close to the trail. Walking across the East Coast Main Line was exciting, but using the yellow telephone to contact the signaller made it perfectly safe. We had one wet day, but our hosts dealt very efficiently with our wet clothes. All in all, a very enjoyable week.

Hearty Northumbrian breakfasts without too much guilt.

    24th Jul 2015Caroline M, london

"The four of us had a great holiday walking the Northumberland Coast Path in July 2015. Everything ran smoothly from the pick up at Alnmouth Station to our last leisurely day in Berwick before catching the train home. Our various hosts were very welcoming and the walking allowed us to tuck into hearty Northumbrian breakfasts without too much guilt. Even the weather co-operated with mainly blue skies all week and near perfect walking conditions. Despite the fine weather the beaches were virtually deserted and my abiding memory is of striding across firm golden sand under vast skies. (Pictures to follow) We also enjoyed seeing the castles and my personal highlight was walking the pilgrim's route across to Holy Island with Lindisfarne Castle looming in the distance. I hope to revisit to tackle Saint Cuthbert's Way next time"

    Great holiday, thanks

Meet and Greet by Jon is a valued part of service, personal touch and Jackie is organised, provides information, and great communication.

We particularly enjoyed staying at the B&Bs, which had very friendly and helpful owners.

    20th Jul 2017S Carr

We stayed an extra night in Berwick, which was very enjoyable. You offer this as an option, but we would suggest this be strongly recommended. Finally, many thanks for a wonderful holiday; we will definitely use Shepherd Walks in the future.

    Fantastic Holiday

    29th Jul 2017 Sara &Stephen Kent

After a hearty breakfast, Jon collected us to start us off at Cresswell...scary that we were solo. It was a very wet soggy start. Weather did improve though and we had a couple of bright days as we made our way up the coast. Beautiful scenery , unspoilt beaches and saw much more on foot than by car. B& Bs were all fabulous apart from a little dull and dingy at Beal the last stay. Made the best of it though. Food along our trip was second to none and a very warm welcome at B& Bs. Walk was well planned, although we did find the book that I brought The Northumberland Coast Path Official Guide invaluable as it had written route instructions, we did refer to Shepherds Walk map too. Bag drops were perfect. Recommended places in our pack were all good. Advice to book was helpful and good to know as I did book ahead in a couple of places. Well done to all the team at Shepherds Walk, very well planned apart from " forgetting to collect us at the station on arrival at Almouth. Soon sorted very swiftly. Thank you againWe are sure to walk with you again.Xx
