The route is generally level with very few steep climbs and is clearly signposted from roads and way-marked throughout. Most stiles have been replaced with gates and the walking surfaces are generally good, although some sections of the path can become muddy during wet weather. There are many opportunities to walk on the beach rather than on the way-marked trail if preferred and as it passes through a number of golf courses, watch out for low flying golf balls.
Shepherds Walks Holidays offer a range of self-guided trips along the Northumberland Coast Path from a 4-day short break on the highlights to walking holiday over the entire length of the coastal path over 7 days.
