Today you will climb up over the Cheviots, passing over the English/Scottish border before down into Hethpool, in the College Valley. Nestled in the Cheviot Hills, this secluded and peaceful spot is one of the most tranquil yet dramatic valleys in Northumberland National Park.
From Hethpool you head out to Wooler, which is where you will be spending the night.
This stone-built town is located on the edge of Northumberland National Park. Wooler is at the foot of the Cheviot Hills, and was known for its wool from its Cheviot sheep, which were farmed locally. This small town has a reputation for friendliness, making it a great place to stop for the night.
This is a lovely days walk as you gradually climb out of Wooler before dropping down to Horton.
On todays walk you will reach St Cuthbert's Cave, a large sandstone outcrop where the saint's body is said to have rested after leaving Holy Island in 875AD when Vikings attacked Lindisfarne, forcing the monks to flee. From the cave, you can see splendid views of the Cheviot Hills and the Northumberland coastline.
After a hearty breakfast you will walk to Holy Island, crossing the sands on the Pilgrims Causeway or alternatively you can walk the causeway over to Holy Island. We will check the tide times for you, for this last days walking.
Over night stay on Holy Island.
We will then pick you up from Holy Island and transfer you back to your car at Kirk Yetholm or Berwick Train Station.

Press choose to walk with us – Shepherds Walks Holidays are asked to deliver a very high percentage of the trips for journalists in the region. When the Tourist Boards are approached by a journalist wanting to visit the area who do they ask to provide their holiday or take them out walking? Shepherds Walks.
We have had press trips on all our routes and the articles speak for themselves.
Protected Holiday - All our holidays are protected through the operation of a Trust Account.
We are close at hand if you need us – We are a local business and if you need us at any time during your holiday just ask. If you are on a self guided trip we often will catch up with you, even over a drink one evening, just to make sure everything is going well. It’s better to iron out any little problems during your holiday, rather than hearing about them when you are back at home.
We enjoy great relationships with your accommodation providers and they will help us to help you
As we are literally on the doorstep we know the best places to stay. Often we will have block booked the best accommodation the previous year. We want our customers to stay in the best possible accommodation. We would rather sort any problems out during a trip and then you can get on and enjoy yourself rather than finding out there has been a problem at the end when it is to late.

Yes we do, we provide the Harvey Map for this route and also more detailed maps to guide you to your accommodation each night. You also will receive detailed trip notes that we have compiled which has everything you need in it to really help you make a great walk into a holiday of a lifetime.
You will receive all your final walk info by email approximately four weeks prior to departure. A hard copy of your holiday pack will be posted to you the following day, including your map, giving you plenty of time to go through all of the information before your departure. Anything you are not sure about, we are only a phonecall or email away!
Yes you can at any point, just get in touch and we can discuss the best options for this trip.
If you are coming to the UK from overseas it is a condition of our tours that you are covered by medical and personal travel insurance that includes repatriation to your home country. If you are a UK resident medical and personal travel insurance is also recommended. If you have not organised appropriate insurance yet, please do so before you travel.
Yes, we move your bags for you everyday. You just leave your main bag at your accommodation and we will move it for you, so it will be at your next nights accommodation waiting for you.
You just carry your day pack.
Your baggage allowance for the trip is one main piece of luggage which should be preferably either a backpack/rucksack or sports bag, and one small daypack. Try to travel as light as possible. It is best to avoid large solid hardtop suitcases as these cause difficulties on transfer vehicles etc.
The larger piece of luggage will travel on the vehicle between accommodations and the daypack should be suitable for carrying any additional outer-layer clothing and items you will need on your walk during the day. As a general rule, we would recommend that your main piece of luggage shouldn't weigh more than 15 - 20 kilos.
Double – One double bed for two people.
Twin – Two single beds each for one person.
Single – A room with a single bed in.
This was a nostalgic walk for my sister and I , now in our 70s . We were covering familiar ground from our childhood. Northumberland remains beautiful, still largely unspoilt with wonderful views of the Cheviots. Shepherds Walks Holidays adapted the walk for us so that we finished in Bamburgh, again for old times sake!
