St Cuthbert's Way - Self guided

The route of St Cuthbert's Way, which includes low level stretches along riverside paths and in the Northumberland coastal area as well as more strenuous stretches across the Eildon Hills and through the Cheviot Hills, starts at the historic Scottish Borders town of Melrose, where St Cuthbert is said to have started his ministry and his life of religious devotion, and finishes at Holy Island otherwise known as Lindisfarne, where he ended his days. St Cuthbert became one of the most important medieval saints of England and is regarded as the patron saint of Northumbria and the inspiration behind the famous Lindisfarne Gospels.

This truly is a fantastic trail, passing from Scotland into England through some very varied landscapes full of historical interest and natural beauty from beautiful small border villages and historic towns to the rugged splendour of the Cheviot hills. You are treated to some of the best walking in Britain as you climb up over the Border ridge and drop down into England.

Quality self-guided walking holiday along St Cuthbert's Way.

What better way to complete St Cuthbert's Way than by walking the trail at your own pace with this self guided trip.

Day 1 Arrive Alnmouth station or Rothbury -

If you arrive by train, we can arrange to pick you up from Alnmouth station and take you to Rothbury, for your first nights’ accommodation. See supplement above.

If you arrive by car, you can go directly to Rothbury and leave your car there for the duration of your holiday for free.

Day 2 Melrose St Boswells - 7 miles (12 kilometres)

Today we will pick you up from Rothbury and transfer you to Melrose.

You will start your walk from Melrose, where St Cuthbert was born and started his ministry. A nice start to your holiday with a gentle walk to St Boswell, a village just 7 ½ miles east of Melrose.

Day 3 St Boswells to Jedburgh - 10.5 miles/17 km

Your first place on the trail today will be Maxton, the place where March Days took place during the 14th century, to discuss cross-border quarrels. You will also visit Lilliard’s Stone.

Tonight you will be staying in or near Jedburgh, a short distance from the trail.

Day 4 Jedburgh to Kirk Yetholm - 15 miles/24 km

After a night in the historic town of Jedburgh you will take-in the highest point of St Cuthbert’s Way, Wideopen Hill, which is also the half-way point of the walk.

In the evening you will be staying in or near the village of Kirk Yetholm, which is about 1 mile from the English border.

Day 5 Kirk Yetholm to Wooler - 13 miles (21 kilometres)

Today you will climb up over the Cheviots, passing over the English/Scottish border before down into Hethpool, in the College Valley. Nestled in the Cheviot Hills, this secluded and peaceful spot is one of the most tranquil yet dramatic valleys in Northumberland National Park.

From Hethpool you head out to Wooler, which is where you will be spending the night.

This stone-built town is located on the edge of Northumberland National Park. Wooler is at the foot of the Cheviot Hills, and was known for its wool from its Cheviot sheep, which were farmed locally. This small town has a reputation for friendliness, making it a great place to stop for the night.

Day 6 Wooler to Fenwick - 11.5 miles/18.5 km

On today’s walk you will stop at St Cuthbert's Cave, a large natural sandstone outcrop, where the saint's body is said to have rested after leaving Holy Island in 875AD when Vikings attacked Lindisfarne, forcing the monks to flee.

From the cave, you can see splendid views of the Cheviot Hills and the Northumberland coastline.

A beautiful section of the walk.

Day 7 Fenwick to Holy Island - 5.5 miles/9 km

After a hearty breakfast, you will walk across either the sands on the Pilgrims Causeway or alternatively you can walk the causeway over to Holy Island, which can only be crossed when the tide allows. We will check the tide times for you for this last days walking.

We will then pick you up from Holy Island and transfer you back to Alnmouth to catch train home or to Rothbury to collect your car. If you don't fancy the journey home after a long day's walk, then we can add an extra night's accommodation (not included in price) in Alnmouth or Rothbury.

Spectacular Walking Holiday on St Cuthbert's Way

Monday 27th June 2022 Carolyn Hetrick

We booked our walking holiday with Shepherds Walks to traverse St Cuthbert's Way, and added an extra night on Holy Island and every aspect of our trip was memorable.

The pre-trip arrangements and preparation materials provided everything we needed and everyone was so pleasant.

All our transportation to and from Newcastle with Jason, he was was superb; our accommodations were comfortable and we never lacked assistance or advice.

Obtaining packed lunches for the next day was easy and it was obvious that folks were used to hikers. We truly enjoyed working with people who are locals and have great love for their home makes this kind of personal traveling a delight and sets Shepherds Walks apart from a travel company that just offers services but is not local.

There was one change due to staffing considerations, but a very acceptable alternative option was made available. One accommodation on a Sunday had only limited dinner possibilities which we had not anticipated but the folk in town shared a wonderful option that we managed to book and it was fun to meet people and share in lively banter.

We hope to return for another walking holiday and have been recommending Shepherds Walks to our trekking and traveling friends.

St Cuthbert's Way - bespoke

Monday 28th June 2021 M Cawkwell

The planning of this holiday was very smooth and clear. The hiking map was very useful and easy to follow. We particularly appreciated the daily sheets with photograph, map and essential details.  The Bespoke system responded to our requirements and meant we could walk St Cuthberts Way according to our fitness level and return to this lovely part of the country.

The trip to Holy Island on a sparkling sea and accompanied by dolphins was a high point.

St Cuthberts Way

Thursday 3rd June 2021 Kaye Hunt

At 61 and coming from Essex there were moments when I wondered if I had been a tad reckless doing this. I had not done something like this on my own before. Yet I never felt unsafe and felt secure in the thorough and encouraging support of Shepherds Walks throughout. Would happily do another walk with them. They took care of me very well.

The St Cuthbert’s Way: a wonderful experience

Thursday 4th July 2019 Pam and Stephen Turner

This was another excellent holiday with Shepherds Walks. We thoroughly enjoyed walking the St Cuthbert’s Way in June 2019 through a wide variety of landscapes in perfect weather. The highlight was walking across the sands, barefoot on the Pilgrim’s Trail to finish at Holy Island. The holiday was expertly organised. Jackie fulfilled our particular requirements for accommodation and it was good to meet Jon again for our briefing before the start of our walk. We would thoroughly recommend Shepherds Walks and look forward to booking another holiday with the team again.

We felt very reassured after our initial meeting and knew that if we had any problems they’d be quickly sorted.

Thursday 4th July 2019 F Smith

We’ve done similar holidays before, booking our own accommodation. It was really nice to leave organisation of the holiday to the experts.

We look forward to walking with you again.

Friday 28th June 2019 P & S Turner

Faultless organisation. We appreciated Jackie booking accommodation to meet our requirements and Jon's briefing.

St Cuthberts Way

Monday 16th July 2018 Geoff Hartley

My wife Carol and I have just completed the St Cuthbert's Way with Shepherds Walks, we cannot put into words how wonderful the experience was. The accommodations along the way were top class with the added personal touch from the proprietors of the B and Bs and hotels. Most importantly the personal touch from Jon and his team from Shepherds Walks is marvellous and something that is missing from modern day Tour companies.A simply fantastic experience, with a reassuring personal touch, thank you Shepherds Walks

Great Holiday

Friday 11th August 2017 Andrew Travis

Thank you for a really enjoyable walking holiday. All went very smoothly, and the accommodation ranged from very good to excellent. The borders region is a unique part of Britain and long may it remain so. It felt a bit like a pilgrimage - St Cuthbert was never very far away - and it was very satisfying to reach Lindisfarne Priory in its peaceful setting. I am sure we will be back with Shepherds Walks again before too long.

St. Cuthberts Way

Monday 31st July 2017 David & Mary Bolster

This is an excellent walk. Each mile is varied, each day is different. Melrose, Dryburgh and Jedburgh Abbeys enhance the walk. Lindisfarne is a wonderful and rich ending to the walk, and well worth an extra night before returning home. Thanks to Shepherds walks which made it easy.

St Cuthbert's Way - loved it

Friday 30th September 2016 Sarah

Really enjoyed the variety of scenery. It was the first long distance walk that we had done and it fitted the bill perfectly.

St. Cuthberts Way is a delightful walk

Monday 11th April 2016 Elaine, Harry & Basil (the dog)

The St. Cuthberts Way is a delightful walk incorporating the Border Regions great variety of landscapes.

We set off from the beautiful town of Melrose having been transported by the Shepherds team to the start of the walk. In good weather and on dry paths we made our way across the lovely Scottish countryside to our excellent overnight accommodation.

This pattern was continued over six nights to our destination at Lindisfarne. We thoroughly enjoyed our well organised holiday and appreciated being looked after by the Shepherds Team.

We recommend this holiday, we had so much enjoyment walking in the countryside during the day and pleasant evenings at the accommodation.

Thanks to you all, Elaine, Harry & Basil (the dog).

We would recommend Shepherds Walks Holidays

Friday 25th September 2015 S Mason

We are trying to interest some friends in a walking holiday in the UK. Of course, we will be recommending Shepherds Walk Holidays as we had such a great walking holiday on St Cuthbert's Way.

Wonderful holiday - St Cuthberts Way

Monday 18th May 2015 Don and Diane, Illinois

Diane and I completed our walking holiday of St. Cuthberts Way in May, 2015. Thank you for a wonderful experience. We enjoyed the change of scenery each day; the beauty of Melrose Abbey, the quant villages along the way, the remoteness of the Cheviots, and the walk to Lindisfarne while the tide was out. Each day of the walk was different.

The accommodations provided by Shepherds Walk were outstanding. Each hotel and bed and breakfast we stayed at was unique and comfortable. The proprietors of each establishment were all very friendly and totally put us at ease.

Tanks again for putting together a wonderful holiday for us, this time on St Cuthbert’s Way.
