Three Peaks in Three Days - Guided - June 2020

The Three Peaks area covers about 160 square kilometers of upland in the Pennines, with internationally famous limestone scenery. Much of the area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, owing to the special nature and fragility of its upland ecosystem.

Whernside, Ingleborough and Penyghent, the Three Peaks, all around 700 meters high, are probably the most popular outdoor areas in the Yorkshire Dales National Park due to the wild landscape, the limestone features, and the hill walking potential. As many as 120,000 people climb Ingleborough each year.

This is a wonderful fully guided short break in the Yorkshire Dales 'bagging' the famous three peaks of Whernside, Pen-y-Ghent and Ingleborough. With unspoilt, breathtaking scenery awaiting you, we invite you to join us and soak up the peace and solitude of its valleys, crags, peaks, caves and moorlands that have captured the heart of both artists and writers alike.

You will be based in Ingleton for the duration of the trip with the rest of the group and an experienced Shepherds Walks guide who will be with you throughout the trip, guiding you through each day so that you can relax and enjoy your holiday. The guide’s fascinating and infectious in-depth knowledge of the area will bring the geology and formation of the unique and varied landscapes alive for a truly memorable short break.

At the end of each day you will be able to relax with like-minded people in quality accommodation, enjoy locally prepared food and talk over the great day’s walking you have just had.

Quality guided walking holiday up the famous Yorkshire Dales Three Peaks over three days.

Day : 1 - Ingleton

Overnight stay

This first evening we will be staying in the village of Ingleton, in the Yorkshire Dales, which is surrounded by magnificent countryside with caves, waterfalls, and mountains. The Craven Fault crosses the area, and geological and archaeological sites abound.

Ingleton is easy to get to by car if you choose to drive, but if you prefer to arrive by rail we can arrange to pick you up from Ribblehead station.
There will be a short briefing on the first evening by the guide to let you know what is ahead.

Day : 2 - Whernside

7.5 miles (12 kilometres) - 1,640ft of ascent

After a hearty breakfast there will be a short journey to Ribblehead, just 10 minutes from Ingleton.

Ribblehead, at the top of Ribblesdale, is in the centre of the Three Peaks and is itself famous for the Ribblehead Viaduct where the Settle-Carlisle Railway crosses the boggy moor. This was the site of an infamous shanty town during the railway construction, a task which required many tunnels, viaducts and bridges, and cost many lives.

From here you will be guided up the best route on Whernside, the highest of the three peaks (2416ft, 736m). It is a gradual climb, initially following the Settle - Carlisle railway before you climb up to the long summit ridge, with spectacular views before reaching the summit itself.

After lunch on the summit you will continue along the ridge before dropping back down to Ribblehead via a circular route.

There will then be a short transfer back to Ingleton, there will be an option to visit White Scar Caves (weather and time permitting), the longest show cave in Britain. Please note entrance to the caves will be at an additional cost.

After a well deserved rest the group will get together for an evening meal.

Day : 3 - Pen-y-Ghent

9 miles (15 kilometres) 1,805ft of ascent

After a short journey to Horton in Ribblesdale you will start your steady climb up one of the most impressive of the three peaks, Pen-y-Ghent.

At 2278 ft (694m) it is the lowest of the three peaks, but having extensive views from the summit towards tomorrow’s peak, Ingleborough and Whernside which was the focus of Saturday’s walk.

After lunch on the summit you will continue, initially following part of the Pennine Way, down to Helwith Bridge before continuing through some limestone scenery back to Horton on Ribblesdale.

There will then be a short transfer back to the accommodation in Ingleton.

Day : 4 - Ingleborough

6 miles (10 kilometres) 581m/1906ft of ascent.

After breakfast you will walk out of the accommodation and start your ascent of probably the most famous of the three peaks, Ingleborough

You will gradually climb up to the 2373 ft (723 m) summit to be greeted by more spectacular views including the two peaks walked on Sunday and Monday hopefully providing a real sense of achievement.

Again you will be able to enjoy your lunch on this, the third and final summit, hurrah!

You then will drop back down giving plenty of time to look back on what has been a holiday to remember.

You will then return back to the accommodation before starting on your journey home.
